A broken door lock is a big issue. The biggest culprit of locks breaking are the actuators. You can repair the lock at home or have it done in a repair shop.

Most common reasons for power lock failure

A power lock is the device that electronically locks your doors. Most cars these days have power locks. They are important to keep us safe and our kids safe. When they fail you can be locked out of your car with no way to get in. Here are some common reasons they fail:

  • Broken Actuator
  • Blown Fuse
  • Defective Switch
  • Blown Motor
  • Bad Linkage

What's the cost to fix my car door lock?

The cost to fix your car door can vary based on multiple factors. If the repair requires removal of a door panel then your cost is going to be more than a simple repair. The type of parts you use also effect the price. A generic aftermarket part is cheaper than an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer.) Here are some cost estimations:

  • A new actuator costs about $125
  • A new button or switch costs around $75
  • If the door panel has to come off it cost at least $200
  • A new motor can cost upwards of $700

Stop using the passenger side—fix the lock yourself!

Climbing through your passenger side gets old. It's embarrassing when you have to do it in public. You can fix your door yourself. Here is what to do if it's the actuator:

Gather your tools

You need two screwdrivers, one flathead and one offset flathead.

Remove the door panel

Consult a owners manual to find the screws you need to remove.

Remove the actuator

Uses the 2 screwdrivers to remove the actuator. Use the offset screwdriver to pry the actuator off the rails and the normal flathead to hold down the actuator lock button.

Slide the new actuator on

Use the rails as a guide to slide the new actuator into place. Replace the door panel.

All in all this process should cost only around $50 and should take an hour or so.

Does insurance cover a locksmith?

Most insurance companies don't cover a locksmith. However, if you have roadside assistance through your insurance, help is only a call or click away. Roadside assistance is great for emergency situations. If you're stuck in the middle of a parking lot, they can come unlock your car.
