Types of car paint damage

Your cars paint can get messed up in many different ways. Your car can come into contact with many hazards throughout its life. From other cars, to shopping carts, and tree branches, your car probably is going to get damaged at some point. Here are some of the most common type of damages.

  • Scratches- A scratch that doesn't expose metal but goes through the clear coat
  • Scuffs- A scratch that only effects the clear coat
  • Deep Scratches- A scratch that exposes metal

How much does repairing paint damage cost?

Depending on the type of damage it could be as low as $50 to as high a $7000. The deeper the scratch the more it's going to cost to repair it. Scratches are more expensive based on how many paint layers they go through.

  • For a regular scratch that only goes down into the paint coats and doesn't effect the metal frame, costs between $400 to $1000.
  • For a clear coat scuff an auto body shop charges between $50 and $70.
  • Deep scratches down to the metal cost between $800 to $7000 depending on your car.

Should I paint it myself or go to an auto body shop?

For smaller scratches you may feel comfortable applying rubbing compound or working the sander yourself. Painting a car yourself can be a task especially if you don't have the proper equipment. Although it's cheaper, if it comes out wrong it isn't covered by the warranty at the auto shop.

  • The shop has better equipment and can give more detail in the repair

Cons:

  • More expensive
  • If it's not able to be done at home the shop can over charge you

Does insurance cover paint damage?

Not all insurance policies are the same. If the damage happened in a crash where you weren't at-fault it should be covered. However, if you don't have comprehensive insurance there are common events that insurance may not cover. These include: vandalism, hitting an animal, riots, or fire. Make sure you have comprehensive coverage or you may be left on the hook for damages.
